Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
