On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
