Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
