Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say early analysis show the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
An important political figure said the incident rendered him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in 2020.
