At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
